Late fall of 1985, clear beautiful cool days in Texas, I remember driving around Austin listening to this cassette. Definitely her best of the 1980’s. “Impossible Dreamer” is my favorite from this one, and one of the best songs she ever wrote.
@blackkendoll82 You obviously love Joni’s incredible artistry as much as I do and I want to thank you so much for bringing it here where new listeners can enjoy the magnificent work she has created. As an aside, I always chuckle when I pull out her “Hits” and “Misses” CD’s to listen. On Joni’s worst day, her “Misses” CD is a million times more wonderful than some of the garbage produced today. She is a genius at finding the most important things in our hearts and creating musical poetry!
A friend of mine serving in Afghanistan uploaded a photo on Facebook of a street dog gnawing on the remains of another dog, the skull — the caption was (what else) dog eat dog –
I wonder if Joni is referring to the music industry, or to humanity in general
Certainly her most underrated album. I thought it was a masterpiece when I heard it 20 years ago, and it’s still GOT IT!!!! She simply can’t do anything mediocre, imo.
i remember this track had a really cool video, joni eating a cake ? ( or so it seemed at the time) i think the single version had a slightly different mix but dont think the video is on here
i love this album. steve lukather and michael landau on guitars.Joni always did have great musicians playing her material.lyrically there are few to match her.
Actually, Shiny Toys was released on Canada as a single, but it has a different chorus male voice recit than the album version: he says “I love my Porsche – I love being out on the golf course” on the radio single. On the album, he just says :”I love my Porsche”. (I think it was Thomas Dolby)

Okay, Court and Spark was Mitch’s best album, but this sleeper is terrific.

There’s a great video for this song, the kind that takes you places. Does anyone have it?

Still have this album on vinyl. Best track in the album simply because of the harmonic back-up voice of Mike Mcdonald.

That line was inspired. She actually was involved in a car accident with her husband around the time this song was written.
