    @starbleach

    You are absolutely right…
it is a shame how people are incapable of seeing the beauty in front of them…. they just tend to disagree with something

  2. starbleach Says:

@danielbalter No ones gives a fuck wether you have a “barking” all-knowing instructor and you master your so sacred and untouchable rule of 3rds. Stop showing off

  3. starbleach Says:

Yeah, Captain Vane is right, man. It’s not about critizising just 4 the sake of it. This video’s goal is just for shiwing technique.

  4. CaptainVane Says:

@danielbalter I think it’s more of a guideline than a rule, sometimes it just doesn’t work. My teachers always told me to be suspicious when someone mentions the words ‘rules’ and ‘art’ in the same sentence, which ironically made me a little suspicious. If artists never broke any rules, we’d all be doing cavepaintings. Maybe a bit dramatic, but you know what I mean.

  5. danielbalter Says:

I can’t believe he put the face in the center of the paining–this is a beginner’s mistake–the rule of thirds! My Instructor would have barked at me like a Marine Corps Drill instructor if I had centered the face and kept it so small in the composition. Too much negative space around the figure.

@painterinoil I was David Leffel’s student for about 4 years in the Art Students League in New York. He did a great job teaching me how to paint.
I remember when I first bought the book you ordered I was dying to get into his class. If you want to see the results of his teachings, check out my paintings on my Facebook page. In “search for people” type in “Joseph Russotto”. I’m the guy with the dark hair and mole. Look for the album “pictures I’ve painted”. Hope this inspires you!

What kind of brushes do you make?
I’m obsessed with brushes (I have over 600 -at least $5,000 worth) and am always looking for a better one.
Do you have catalog or something?

  15. rosemarythompson Says:

does anyone have an email for David as I would love to send him samples of the brushes I make

  17. 1skylimit Says:

Interesting. I’m wondering how long it would take using this technique?

  18. painterinoil Says:

@painterinoil Me too! My art has improved so much from the book! I have been drawing and painting since I was a kid with no lessons except for a drawing class while in college. I have tons of other books, videos ect and I just could not seem to break through from the mainstreem into the Master level. Although I still have a long way to go, this book has gave me the breakthrough needed and made a world of difference in my artwork. We should keep in touch! I want to learn all I can from David.

  19. painterinoil Says:

Just ordered the book “Oil Painting Secrets from a Master” by Linda Cateura. This book is written about oil painting utilizing David’s advice and teachings. Since I ordered via internet, I can not wait to get the book. I am very glad to have found him on youtube. I have not heard of David before so this is an introduction for me. I am very excited and looking forward to reading this book and I have great expectations that it will help improve my paintings. Thank you for posting this video!

I bought this DVD via ebay and I give a 5 star rating out of 5! I also Everett Ray. Kinstler and Daniel Greene’s Erin and of the three I like this one the best because it matches more of who I am – as an artist.

  22. misfitdreamer Says:

it’s amazing how close his work comes to rembrant.

  23. angelseverheart Says:

David Leffel’s color and value is second to none.

  24. skrillagrabba Says:

to express the head as a solid form, he’s treating it as an object. in this case, a block/cube.

  25. josvanr Says:

anyone know why he starts with these horizontal lines?…..
