@thelastone94 – The slot picks random values for the reels. The reels stop at the corresponding spot. Is each spot equally weighted on a slot machine. On a video slot, generally, yes. On a REEL slot, generally, no (there are not enough “stops” on a conventional reel slot to generate the big jackpots everyone likes).

@TheShamusOfSlots well said Shamus Pre programmed and random are not the same thing in this instance. While the overall payout is pre-programmed the individual spins themselves are determined by the RNG. He says that I cant walk up to a slot and expect to hit the jackpot but in fact I can because the outcome is RANDOM.

@cammybammy – Slot machines legally have to pay at least 85% … but most casinos, overall, pay above 90% back. The State lottery pays something closer to half of the money in prizes. The odds of winning a big prize are not that great but most modern slot machines pay back “something” (often less than the bet) over 50% of the time.

@akerscarter – Hi akerscarter … you can read my previous post. Indeed, slots will make a big profit over a long period of time … but they can lose money for the casino over weeks and months. Think of a slot machine like a roulette wheel. If you spin the reels on the slot long enough, it will end up paying out the sum of all “stops” on the reels divided by the total number of spins.

@catwhoisfat – There are two classes of slot machines. One has centrally determined wins (called Class 2). It’s playing a game of bingo “under the covers”. With class 3, a random number generator in each machine coincides with stops on a reel. The wins are not predetermined at all. The casino selects a payback percentage, and the symbols on the virutal reels will be re-arranged to matched the payback.

It’s still random in the sense that we don’t know when it’s going to pay. Of COURSE it has a built-in mechanism to ensure it makes a (big) profit! I love to gamble…slots, craps, sports, poker, whatever, but I know the only winners in the long run are the casinos. I don’t care, for me it’s an entertainment expense like anything else I do for fun.
